There’s A Moose on the Loose!

Skill Level:  Intermediate

Materials:

  • 1 skein – Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, Color #122 (Taupe), Main Color (MC)
  • ½  skein – Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, Color #186 (Maize), Contrasting Color (CC)
  • Set of US #4 double pointed needles
  • Set of US #2 straight or circular needles
  • Size I crochet hook 
  • Stuffing
  • Yarn Needle
  • Buttons, safety eyes and/or nose or tiny amount of yarn for eyes and/or nose
  • Stitch marker

GaugeGauge doesn’t really matter as long as there are no holes when fabric is slightly stretched.

Height:  approx. 12″ tall (seated) 

Terminology:

CO       Cast on

K          Knit

Kfb       Knit into the front and back of the stitch

M1       With the left needle tip, lift strand between needles from front to back.  Knit the loop through the back to twist the stitch.

K2 tog  Knit two stitches together

Ssk  Slip one stitch, then slip the next. Insert left needle into the front loops of the slipped stitches and knit them together from this position (through the back loops).

Sk2p      Slip one stitch, knit two stitches together, then pass slipped stitch over

I-Cord  *Knit a row. Slide row to other end of needle. Do not turn the work. Repeat from *.

 Head (MC):

CO 5 sts, distribute evenly between 3 dpns and join in round, placing a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

Round 1: (Kfb) 5 times. (10 sts.)

Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit even

Round 3: (K1, M1, K1) 5 times. (15 sts.)

Round 5: (K1, M1, K1) 7 times, end K1 (22 sts.)

Round 7: (K3, M1, K1) 5 times, end K2 (27 sts.)

Round 9 – 16: Knit even.

Round 17: (K4, K2 tog) 4 times, end K3 (23 sts.)

Round 19: Knit even.                                                                                                           

Round 21: (K5, K2 tog) 3 times, end knit 2 (20 sts)

Round 23: Knit even.

Round 25: (K3, M1, K1) 5 times (25 sts.)

Round 27: (K7, M1, K1) 3 times, end K1 (28 sts.)

Round 29: Knit even.

Round 31: (K13, M1, K1) 2 times. (30 sts.)

Round 33: Knit even.

Attach buttons or safety eyes or embroider eyes at this time.  Add mouth and eyebrow, if you desire and stuff nose at this time.

Round 35: (K5, k2 tog) 4 times, end K2 (26 sts.)

Round 37: (K4, k2 tog) 4 times, end K2 (22 sts.)

Round 39: (K3, k2 tog) 4 times, end K2 (18 sts.)

Round 41: (K4, k2 tog) 3 times (15 sts.)

Stuff head really well.

Round 43: (K3, k2 tog) 3 times (12 sts.)

Round 45: (K1, k2 tog) 4 times (8 sts.)

Break yarn and weave end through remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten off.  Weave in ends from both sides.

Body (MC):

CO 5 sts, distribute evenly between 3 dpns and join in round, placing a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

Round 1:  Knit into front and back of each stitch. (10 sts.)

Round 2 and all even rounds:  Knit even.

Round 3: (K1, M1, K1) 5 times. (15 sts.)

Round 5: (K1, M1, K1) 7 times, end K1 (22 sts.)

Round 7: (K4, M1, K1) 4 times, end K2 (26 sts.)

Round 8 – 16: Knit even.

Round 17: (K12, M1, K1) 2 times (28 sts.)

Round 19: Knit even.

Round 21: (K13, M1, K1) 2 times (30 sts.)

Round 23: Knit even.

Round 25: (K14, M1, K1) 2 times (32 sts.)

Round 27: Knit even.

Round 29: (K15, M1, K1) 2 times (34 sts.)

Round 31: Knit even.

Round 33: (K16, M1, K1) 2 times (36 sts.)

Round 35: Knit even.

Round 37: (K17, M1, K1) 2 times (38 sts.)

Round 38 – 44: Knit even.

Round 45: (K7, K2 tog) 4 times, end K2 (34 sts.)

Round 47: (K6, K2 tog) 4 times, end K2 (30 sts.)

Round 49: (K4, K2 tog) 5 times (25 sts.)

Stuff body really well.

Round 51: (K3, K2 tog) 5 times (20 sts.)

Round 53: (K2, K2 tog) 5 times (15 sts.)

Round 54 – 60:  Knit even.

Stuff body and neck really well.

Bind off stitches, leaving enough yarn to  attach head to body.

Antlers (Make Two) (CC):

CO 7 sts., distribute evenly and join in round, placing a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.

Rounds 1-8: Knit even.

Round 9:  (Kfb) 4 times, knit to end of round. (11 sts.)

Round 10: Knit even.

Round 11: (Kfb, K1) 4 times, knit to end of round. (15 sts.)

Round 12: Knit even.

Round 13:  (Kfb, K2) 4 times, knit to end of round. (19 sts.)

Round 14 – 15: Knit even.

Next round: Knit across 3 sts., place 13 sts on waste yarn to be worked on later, use backward loop to CO 1 stitch over gap, knit remaining 3 sts and use backward loop to CO 1 st. (8 sts.).  Distribute these 8 sts over 3 needles and knit 5 rounds.  Break yarn, thread tail through 8 sts., pull tight and fasten off.

Place first and last 3 sts. on dpns.  Knit the first 3 sts., use backward loop method to CO 1 st. over gap, knit remaining 3 sts. Pick up and knit 1 st. to close gap. (8 sts).  Distribute these 8 sts over 3 needles and knit 5 rounds.  Break yarn, thread tail through 8 sts., pull tight and fasten off.

Place remaining 7 sts. on dpns.  Knit the 7 sts., then pick up and knit 1 st. to close gap. (8 sts.) Distribute these 8 sts over 3 needles and knit 7 rounds.  Break yarn, thread tail through 8 sts., pull tight and fasten off.

Sew antlers onto head. (You can stuff the antlers lightly by using the eraser side of a Number 2 pencil if you desire before sewing on the antlers.)

Ears (Make Two) (MC):

Using two of the size #2 needles, CO 3 sts. and purl across.

Row 1 (RS): K1, M1, k1, m1, K1. 5 sts.

Row 2 and alternate rows: purl even.

Row 3: K2, M1, k1, M1, k2. 7 sts.

Row 5: K3, M1, k1, M1, k3. 9 sts.

Row 7: Ssk, k5, k2 tog. 7 sts.

Row 9: Ssk, k3, k2 tog.  5 sts.

Row 11: Ssk, k1, k2 tog. 3 sts.

Row 13: Sk2p.  Fasten off remaining stitch and weave in ends.  Sew ears onto head.

Legs (Make Two) (MC):

CO 20 sts., distribute evenly and join in the round.

Knit 35 rounds.

At around round 5, thread yarn from cast on through beginning cast on loops, pull tight and fasten off.

Bind off all stitches leaving enough of a tail to attach leg to body.

Sew limbs to the body.

Arms (Make Two) (MC):

CO 15 sts.

Knit 30 rounds even.

Next round:  Increase 1 stitch at the end of the round.  (16 sts.)

Knit across 8 sts., place marker, M1, k1, M1, place marker, knit to end.

Knit 1 round even.

Knit to marker, slip marker, M1, knit to marker, M1, slip marker, knit to end.

Knit 1 round even.

Next round:  Place 5 gusset stitches on length of yarn, remove gusset markers, use the backward loop method to CO 1 st. over gap left by gusset, knit to end of round.

Knit 10 rounds even.

Cut yarn thread tail through remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten to inside.

Thumb:

Place held gusset stitches onto 3 dpns, pick up and knit 1 st. over gap and join. (6 sts.)

Knit 5 rounds even.

Cut yarn thread tail through remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten to inside.

Stuff arms and sew arms onto body.

Tail (MC):

Chain 8, turn and single crochet 7 remaining stitches.  Attach tail to the back of the body.
