Plus-Size Long Vest/Cover-up

Plus-Size Long Vest/Cover-up

I wanted a long duster vest.  After designing this pattern, I found that I could make another one as a swim-suit cover-up and also could make a long sweater by adding sleeves.  This pattern really could be adapted for many things.

This is a size 2x as the sides are a little smaller than I had wanted.  To increase the pattern chain a multiple of 6 plus 2.   To decrease the pattern, try using a smaller hook.

Like always, everyone is made different.  Try it on as you go... if you have wider hips than on top, you''ll want to make the back bigger.

K hook

worsted weight 4 ply yarn - I used Red Heart dark plum.  Approx. 20 oz of yarn... I started this project before and used up a small amount and then added more yarn.  As I did this, I forgot to keep the skein wrappers to know for sure how much I used.  (I apologize- I will be more careful next time)

Measurements: each side 15" wide, 27" wide back, side 48" long, back 43 1/2" long

Back:

Row 1: Ch 62, do a sc in the 2nd ch from the hook.  Sc across in each st.  Ch 3 and turn.

Row 2: Dc in first sc. *Skip 2 sc and in next sc do (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc). Repeat from * to the end of the row. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Dc in first ch-1 sp, *in next ch-1 sp do (3dc, ch 1, 3dc) then in next ch1-sp do (dc, ch 1, dc). Repeat form * across, end with 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Row 4: Dc in first ch-1 sp, *in next ch-1 sp do (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc). Repeat from *, end with 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 alternating until Row 49.  If you are taller, you might want to make more rows.  Once again, it depends on your body type.  I''m a short person.  However many rows you do, do the same on the sides.

Sides (make 2):

Row 1: Ch 32, do a sc in the 2nd ch from the hook.

I sewed the shoulder seams together and left approximately 5 inches not sewn.  Then I measured and sewed the side seams from under the arms down to bottom of the hips.  I left the rest not sewn up.  When I sewed it this way, the front of the vest was longer than the back because of the shoulders.  I liked it this way, so I left it.  If you don''t like it, take out the rows you don''t like off the sides.

You can embellish this however you want.  You can add buttons or a tie or whatever.  It''s up to personal taste.
