Directions are for small size. Changes for medium and large sizes are in parentheses.

UNBLOCKED GAUGE:
5 dc = 2 inches
6 rows = 4 inches

MATERIALS:

  • 6 (4 oz. skeins) of Spinnerin Marvel Twist Wash Fit, Germantown Deluxe or Deluxe Knitting Worsted
  • Size K crochet hook
  • Size I crochet hook

(BELL BOTTOMS) BLOCK TO FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Hip 35(39-42) inches
Width of leg at calf 18(191/2-21) inches
Width at lower edge 24(26-28) inches
Length ( crotch to lower edge) 30 inches

(PULLON) BLOCK TO FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Bust 35(38-42) inches

TO DECREASE (on a group rnd): Work only 1 dc under 2 consecutive ch-l sps. On the following mesh rnd work the 2 single dc as 1 group.

TO INCREASE (on a mesh rnd): After dc in space before a group, ch 1, 1 dc after first dc of group, ch 1, 1 dc after 2nd dc of group.

-BELL BOTTOMS-

___FIRST LEG: Loosely chain 64(68-72) to measure approx 24(26-28) inches. Taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st to first ch.

___BORDER: Rnd 1 and 2: Ch 2, dc in next ch and in each ch around. Join with sl st to top of ch-2. Rep last rnd, working thru back loops only of each dc.
___Rnd 3 (work thro back loops): Ch 3 (always count as first dc and ch-1), sk 1, * dc in next dc, ch 1, sk 1, rep from * around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of ch-3, 32(34-36) mesh.
___Rnd 4: Ch 2 (always count as first dc of group), dc under first ch-1, then work 2 dc (group) under each ch-1 around. Join with sl st to top of ch-2. 32(34-36) groups.
___Rnd 5 (work thru both loops): Ch 3, dc in sp between 2nd and 3rd dc, ch 1, * dc between next 2 groups, ch 1, rep from * around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of ch-3. Note: Be very careful not to add an extra mesh at joining.
___Rnd 6 (work thru back loops): Ch 2, 1 dc in each ch-1 and in each dc. Join to top of ch-2.
___Rnd 7 (work thro back loops): Ch 2, work 1 dc in each dc. Join to top of ch-2. This completes border.

___Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 3.

From this point, always work thru both loops.
___Rnd 9: Work 7(8-9) groups, decrease (as above), work 14 groups, decrease, work 7(8-9) groups.
___Rnd 10, 11 and 12: Work 30(32-34) mesh. Work 2 rnds in pat.
___Rnd 13: Work 9(11-10) groups, decrease, 8(6-10) groups, decrease, 9(11-10) groups.
___Rnd 14, 15 and 16: Work 28(30-32) mesh. Work 2 rnds in pat.
___Rnd 17: Work 8(9-10) groups, decrease, 8 groups, decrease, 8(9-10) groups.
___Rnd 18: Work 26(28-30) mesh.
___Rnd 19: Work 4(5-6) groups, decrease, 6 groups, decrease, 6 groups, decrease, 4(5-6) groups. This completes shaping of bell bottom.
___Rnd 20 thru 37: Work 23(25-27) mesh. Work until 37 rnds from beg, ending with a group rnds.
___Rnd 38 and 39 (increase as above): Work 1 mesh, increase, work to next to last mesh, increase and work last mesh. Work 25(27-29) groups.
___Rnd 40 and 41: Rep Rnd 38. Work 27(29-31) groups.
___Rnd 42: Rep Rnd 38. Work 29(31-33) groups. Work 2 rnds in pat. Fasten off.

___SECOND LEG: Work same as first leg.

___TO JOIN: With right sides tog and joinings matching, from wrong side and beg with 3rd group to right of joinings, sl st legs tog across 6 groups. Ch 3 (mark as center back). From right side, work 23(25-27) mesh, ending with last dc at joining and mark last dc as center front, work 22(24-26) mesh, ch 1, join with sl st to 2nd ch of ch-3. There are 46(50-54) mesh.
___Rnd 2: Work 1 group, decrease, work group pat to 3rd mesh before center front, decrease, work 2 groups (one at each side of center), decrease, work to last 3 mesh, decrease, work last group.
___Rnd 3: Work 42(46-50) mesh.
___Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.
___Rnd 5: Work 38(42-46) mesh.
___Rnd 6: Work 8(9-10) groups, decrease, 18(20-22) groups, decrease, 8(9-10) groups.
___Rnd 7: Work 36(40-44) mesh. Continue pat until there are 15 rnds after joining legs. Fasten off. Block to measurements. Finish with waistband or cord as below.

___WAISTBAND: Join yarn from right side and work 3 rows sc over round elastic. Draw elastic to desired fit and fasten securely.

___CORD: Cut 4 lengths approx 9 yds long. Make loop 4 inches from one end and work ch, ending 4 inches from other end. Draw cord thru top of pants. Cut 14 lengths of 9 inches. Pull 7 strands thru first ch st. With another strand, tie tightly 1/2 inch from top and trim ends. Pull remaining 7 strands thru last ch st and tie.

-PULLON-

___Rnd 1 and 2: With K hook, loosely chain 86(96-106) to measure approx 34(37-41) inches. Taking care not to twist ch, join with sl st to first ch. Ch 2, dc in next ch and in each ch around. Join with sl st to top of ch-2. Rep last rnd, working thru back loops only of each dc.
___Rnd 3 (work thru back loops): Ch 3 (always count as first dc and ch-1), sk 1, * dc in next dc, ch 1, sk 1; rep from * around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of ch-3. 43(48-53) mesh.
___Rnd 4: Ch 2 (always count as first dc of group), dc under first ch-1, work 2 dc (group) under each ch-1 around. Join with sl st to top of ch-2. 43(48-53) groups.
___Rnd 5 (work thru both loops): Ch 3, dc in sp between 2nd and 3rd dc, ch 1, * dc between next 2 groups, ch 1; rep from * around. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of ch-3. Note: Be very careful not to add an extra mesh at joining.
___Rnd 6 (work thru back loops): Ch 2, 1 dc in each ch-1 and in each dc. Join to top of ch-2.
___Rnd 7 (work thru back loops): Ch 2, work 1 dc in each dc. Join to top of ch-2. Rep from Rnd 3 for pat. Work until 14 rnds from beg.

___Change to I hook for next 4 rnds.

___Change to K hook and work until 24 rnds from beg, ending with Rnd 4. Join and fasten off.

From this point on, front and back are worked separately in rows (back and forth).
___BACK: From right side, join yarn between 2nd and 3rd groups to left of joining.
___Row 1: Ch 3, work 17(20-22) mesh. Ch 2, turn. Work 2 rows in pat.

___Left Shoulder and Neck: Row 1: Work 4 groups, 1 dc under next ch-1, 1 dc in next dc. Ch 2, turn.
___Row 2: Work 5 mesh. Ch 2, turn.
___Row 3: Work 3 groups, 1 dc under next ch-1, 1 dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
___Row 4: Work 4 mesh. Ch 2, turn.
___Rows 5, 6 and 7: Work pat. Fasten off.

___Right Shoulder: From wrong side, join yarn to 7th (10th-12th) dc to left of completed side.
___Row 1: Ch 2, work 5 groups. Ch 3, turn.
___Row 2: Work 4 mesh, omit ch-1, 1 dc in top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn.
___Row 3: Work 4 groups. Ch 3, turn.
___Row 4: Work 4 mesh. Work 3 more rows. Fasten off.

___FRONT: From right side, skip 4 groups for underarm and join yarn in sp before next group.
___Row 1: Ch 3, work 18(20-23) mesh. Ch 2, turn. Work 2 rows in pat. Shape neck and shoulders as on back, with 1(0-1) additional mesh in center front.

___FINISHING: Overcast shoulders.
___Neck Trim: From right side, join yarn at shoulder seam. With I hook, work 1 rnd sc around neck, spacing sts to keep edge flat and holding to desired fit. Join, ch 2. Do not turn. Working thru back loops, work 1 dc in each sc. Join and fasten off.
___Armhole Trim: Join yarn at center of underarm. Work 1 rnd sc around armhole, holding to desired fit. Join, ch 2. Work 1 rnd dc thru back loops. Join and fasten off. Weave in ends. Block to finished measurements.
