When partially joined to make a flat piece, five sided motifs leave a gap between motifs. If you wish to add a shape to fill the gaps, a triangle shape will work (or a diamond shape between multiple rows of joined five sided motifs). If you join multiples of five sided motifs on all sides, it will curl upward into a rounded shape.
Materials Used In The Example:
Worsted Weight Yarn - Red Heart
Color A: 1/8 oz. White
Color C: Small amount of Red
US Size G hook
Motif Width: 5 inches and 5 1/2 inches at widest points
Gauge: 4 dc = 1 inch, 3 dc rows = 2 inch
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
ea = each
rnd = round
sl st = slip stitch
sp = space
How To Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook in stitch, wrap yarn over hook, pull yarn through the stitch and through the loop on the hook, at the same time. A slip stitch does not add any height and is used to join a chain or stitch to another place in the crochet piece.
Starting Chain: With Color A, Chain 4. Join by making a slip stitch in the chain furthest away from the hook, to form a ring.
Rnd 1: With Color A, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc in ring) 4 more times, ch 3, join with a sl st in top of the beginning ch-3 of this round. (5 dc groups)
Rnd 2: sl st in ea of next 2 dc, sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same corner ch-3 sp, * ch 2, skip next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp **, repeat directions between * and ** 3 more times, then ch 2, skip next 3 dc, sl st in top of beginning ch-3 of this rnd.
See Printer-Friendly Page with directions for four rounds all on one page.
