From Crochet at About.com: American Eagle Filet Crochet Chart

Make it with thread for a wallhanging that''s about 14 to 15 inches square or with worsted weight yarn for an afghan around 58 x 60 inches. Of course, you can always choose to do a single crochet or afghan stitch background and cross stitch the eagle design on for a whole new set of possibilities and sizes!

Working the Chart in Filet Crochet
For a 4 dc mesh, starting chain is 202, plus chain 3, (which will count as first dc of first row), for a total starting chain of 205 chains. Begin by working a double crochet in the 5th chain from the hook.

Chart is worked starting at the bottom right; work first row right to left. Second row is worked left to right. Continue alternating row directions in this same manner, following chart.

Approximate finished sizes in filet crochet
(once through the chart, worked in 4 dc mesh):

With size 10 thread (481 yards) and a size 7 steel hook, finished size is about 15.4 inches x 15.8 inches.
With size 20 thread (452 yards) and a size 9 steel hook, finished size is about 14.7 inches x 15.1 inches.
With size 30 thread (422 yards) and a size 11 steel hook, finished size is about 14.1 inches x 14.5 inches.
With fingering/baby weight yarn (1055 yards) and a size F hook, finished size is about 46.9 inches x 45.4 inches.
With sport weight yarn (1224 yards) and a size G hook, finished size is about 53.6 inches x 51.7 inches.
With worsted weight yarn (1393 yards) and a size I hook, finished size is about 60.3 inches x 58 inches.

To Do This Design in Cross Stitch on a Crocheted Background:
To make a single crochet background, chain 68 (for 67 single crochet across each row). For afghan stitch background, chain 67. Omit the lacets, working entirely in single crochet or afghan stitch for 63 rows. Then follow the chart to add the eagle design in cross stitch to this crocheted background.

All instructions and comments on this page were not in the 1920 book; I added them. I recharted the eagle based on a portion of a chart in the 1920 book and added lacets to my version. -- Sandi Marshall Chart the design on this page is based on is from Filet Crochet & Cross Stitch, Book 7, created by Hugo Kirchmaier, published in the year 1920 (the original chart from 1920 is now in the public domain).
