Crocheted Baby Set No. 1171

Materials:  Four 1-ounce balls Bear Brand Babyfair or Bear Brand Wonderized Pompadour.  One ball for trim.  Bone Hook #2.

Abbreviations:

ch   chain

dec dc   decreasing double crochet lp   loop
st   stitch sk   skip sp   space
sc   single crochet sl st   slip stitch tog   together
dc   double crochet yo   yarn over *  *   repeat instructions between asterisks

Sacque:

Row 1.  Ch 83, sc in 2nd st and in each st across.  Ch 1 at end of each row to turn.

Row 2.  * 1 sc in each of 2 (taking up back st only), 3 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 2, sk 2 *, repeat * to * across (12 points).

Row 3.  1 sc in each of 3, * 3 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 6 *, repeat * to * across, ending 1 sc in each of last 3.

Row 4.  1 sc in 1st, sk 1, 1 sc in each of next 2, * 3 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 3, sk 2, 1 sc in each of next 3 *, repeat * to * across, ending 3 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 2, sk 1, 1 sc in last.

Rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17.  Same as Row 3, increasing between points by working 1 sc in every stitch, with 3 sc in each point.

Rows 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16.  Same as Row 4, decreasing by skipping 1 stitch at the beginning and end of each row, and 2 st midway between points.

Row 17 should have 20 st between points.

With separate yarn, join 2nd and 5th points with ch-7 between.  Likewise 8th and 11th points.

Row 18.  Ch 3, s dc in same st, * ch 2, sk 1, sc in next, ch 2, sk 1, e dc in next (shell made) *, repeat * to * across except at each point omit sk 1 on each side of point for extra fullness.  There should be a shell on each point, with 5 shells between, 1 shell in center of each ch-7 under arm, and 3 shells on each side of front (41 shells).  Ch 2, turn.

Row 19.  *Sc in 2nd dc, ch 2, shell in next sc, ch 2 *.  Repeat * to * across.  Ch 3, turn.

Repeat rows 18 and 19 until work measures 6 1/2 or 7 inches.  Fasten off.

Sleeve.

Join yarn at underarm, ch 2, shell in point, *ch 2, sk 3, sc in next, ch 2, sk 3, shell in next *, repeat * to * except at points, sk 2 each side of point to make shell come at point (10 shells, around), ch 2, join in starting st.  Ch 5, turn.

Row 2.  Work in pattern, joining last ch-2 to 3rd st of ch-5.  Ch 2, turn.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until work measures 6 1/2 or 7 inches.

Cuff.

Row 1.  Sc in each of 3 st of each shell, join (30 sc).  Ch 1, turn.

Row 2.  Sc in each st, (back st only), join.  Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 for 1 inch, fasten off.

Bonnet.

Ch 4, join in ring.

Row 1.  12 sc in ring, join. (Ch 1, turn at end of each row).

Row 2.  Sc in each sc (back st only for this and consecutive rows).

Row 3.  * Sc in 1st, 3 sc in next *, repeat around, join.

Row 4.  Sc in 1st, * 3 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 3 *, repeat around, end sc in each of next 2, join.

Row 5.  Sk 1, * sc in each of next 2, 3 sc in next, sc in each of next 2, sk 1 *, repeat, join.

Row 6.  Sc in each sc, with 3 sc in center of each point (6 sc between increases).

Row 7.  Sk 1, sc in each of next 3, sk 2 for decrease, sc in each of next 3, 3 sc in point, continue around in same pattern.

Rows 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18.  Sc in each sc, increasing at points.

Rows 9, 11, 13, 15, 17.  Same, except sk 2 for decrease halfway between points. 

Break yarn at end of 18th row, and fasten off. 

Join yarn in center of one point.

Row 1.  Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, * ch 2, sk 3, sc in next, ch 2, sk 3, shell in next *, repeat 12 times (14 shells).

Row 2.  Ch 3, * sc in center dc of shell, ch 2, shell in sc, ch 2*, repeat across.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 for 4 1/2 inches.

Flare on bonnet.

Row 1.  84 sc across front, ch 1, turn.

Row 2.  (Back st only) * sc in each of 2, 3 sc in next, sc in each of next 2, sk 2*, repeat across, ending sc in 2, 3 sc in next, sc in each of last 2.

Row 3.  Sc in each of 3, 3 sc in point, sc in each of next 3, etc., across.

Row 4.  Sc in 1st, sk 1, sc in each of next 3, 3 sc in next, sc in each of next 3, etc., ending sc in each of 3, sk 1, sc in last.

Row 5.  Sc in each st, 3 sc in each point.

Row 6.  Same as row 4, etc., (sk 2 midway between points).

Make 7 rows, each an increase row.  Do not decrease between points.  Sc across end of flare and neck of bonnet, fasten off.

Turn flare back and run ribbon or crocheted cord through both flare and bonnet near face.

Trim all edges.  Ch 3, sk 1, sc in next, around.
