Rugged Tote

This very strong and sturdy bag is made from plastic canvas yarn to hold heavy objects.

Directions
Beginner

Finished Size
10 1/2 x 12 inches, excluding straps

Materials

  • Plastic canvas yarn (25 yds per skein): 18 skeins beige
  • Size J/10 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle

Gauge
5 sc = 2 inches; 9 sc rows = 3 inches
Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Work with 2 strands held tog throughout unless otherwise indicated.

Do not join rnds unless otherwise indicated. Use a CC scrap to mark rnds.

Tote
Rnd 1: With 2 strands held tog, ch 25, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 22 chs, 3 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of next 22 chs. (50 sc)
Rnd 2: [2 sc in each of next 3 sc, sc in each of next 22 sc] twice. (56 sc)
Rnd 3: [{Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc} 3 times, sc in each of next 22 sc] twice. (62 sc)
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around, inc 4 sc evenly sp across each curved end. (60 sc)
Rnds 5-30: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 31: Sl st in each st around, fasten off.

Strap
Make 2
Row 1: Working with 1 strand yarn, leaving a 10-inch length at beg, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs, turn. (4 sc)
Rows 2-48: Ch 1, sc in each of next 4 sc, turn.

At the end of Row 48, leaving a 10-inch length, fasten off.

Straps are sewn to inside of tote to Rnd 30. Fold bag in half, leaving 11 sc sts free at center; sew each end of strap to next 4 sts. Rep in same manner on opposite side of tote with rem strap.
