Christmas Elf Pattern
For Doorhanging or Wallhanging

Materials


Worsted Weight Yarn
1/2 oz. dark green
1/2 oz. white
1 oz. red
1/2 oz. pink
Size G crochet hook
jingle bell, pom-pom or button to sew to the end of the hat

Directions
Note: At end of each row, you will chain 1 to turn.
Body: (Make 2)
With dark green, ch 13.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (12 sc)
Row 2 - 17: sc in ea sc across.
Row 18: sc in first 2 sc, hdc in next 3 sc, sc in next 2 sc,
hdc in next 3 sc, sc in last 2 sc. End off. Sew sides and bottom
together, leaving top open for stuffing. Stuff lightly. Sew top
edge closed.

Sleeve: (Make 2)
Note: Unless otherwise noted, at end of each row,
you will chain 1 to turn.

With white, ch 9.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (8 sc)
Row 2: ch 2, dc in ea sc across.
Row 3: Attach red. With red, ch 1, (sc in next dc,
leaving next st in this row unworked, dc in sc two rows below)
repeat across.
Row 4: With red, sc in ea st across.
Row 5: With white, ch 1, sc in first sc, dc around post
of red dc of two rows below; (sc in next sc, dc around post of
red dc two rows below) repeat across.
Row 6: With white, sc in ea st across.
Row 7: With red, sc in first sc, leaving next st in this row
unworked, dc around post of white dc two rows below, (sc in next sc,
leaving next st in this row unworked, dc around post of white dc two
rows below) repeat across.
Row 8: With red, sc in ea st across.
Rows 9 - 16: Repeat rows 5 - 8 (twice).
Fold piece in half with wrong sides together.

Hand (Make 4):
With pink, ch 5.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (4 sc)
Row 2: sc in ea sc across.
Row 3: sc first two sc together for decrease,
sc last 2 sc tog. (2 sc)
Row 4: sc in ea sc across. End off. Weave in ends.
Do not stuff. With wrong sides held together, sew two hand
pieces together along rounded edge. Do not sew the straight
edge of row 1 together. Turn right side out. Insert bottom
edge of row 1 so that it is slightly inside the folded bottom
of sleeve and sew in place.
With right sides facing out, and wrong sides held together,
sew the side edge of the sleeve closed.
Sew a sleeve to each upper side of body.

Pant Legs: (Make 2)
Note: Unless otherwise noted, at end of each row,
you will chain 1 to turn.

With white, ch 9.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (8 sc)
Row 2: ch 2, dc in ea sc across.
Row 3: Attach red. With red, ch 1, (sc in next dc,
leaving next st in this row unworked, dc in sc two rows below)
repeat across.
Row 4: With red, sc in ea st across.
Row 5: With white, ch 1, sc in first sc, dc around
post of red dc of two rows below; (sc in next sc, dc around
post of red dc two rows below) repeat across.
Row 6: With white, sc in ea st across.
Row 7: With red, sc in first sc, leaving next st in this
row unworked, dc around post of white dc two rows below, (sc in
next sc, leaving next st in this row unworked, dc around post of
white dc two rows below) repeat across.
Row 8: With red, sc in ea st across.
Rows 9 - 20: Repeat rows 5 - 8 (three times).
Fold piece in half with wrong sides together.
Do not stuff. With yarn and large-eye needle, sew
side of pant leg closed.
Sew pant legs to the bottom of
body piece.

Shoe (Make 2):
With dark green, ch 5.
Rnd 1 Shoe Bottom: (sc in back loops only for this round)
sc in back loop of 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 back
loops, 3 sc in 4th back loop. Continuing on the other
side, sc in first 3 remaining loops, 2 sc in last loop.
Join with slip stitch in 1st sc.
Rnd 2 Shoe Bottom: ch 1, sc in same st as ch 1, sc in next
2 sc, (2 sc in next sc) two times, sc in next 3 sc,
(2 sc in next sc) two times. Join with slip stitch in
first sc.
Rnd 3 Shoe Bottom: ch 1, (sc next 2 sc tog for dec) around,
join with sl st in first sc. End off.
Shoe Top: With dark green, ch 3.
Row 1 Shoe Top: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch. (2 sc)
Rows 2 - 4 Shoe Top: sc in ea sc across.
Row 5 Shoe Top: sc in first sc, ch 3, dc in same st; ch 2,
sl st in top of dc just made; dc in next sc; ch 3, sc in same sc.
End off.
Lightly stuff shoe bottom. Sew shoe top to shoe bottom, sewing
sides of rows 1 - 4 of shoe top on, with row 5 hanging, unattached,
out the front of the shoe. Fold row 5 upward for the curled tip of
the shoe.
Sew back part of shoe top to the bottom of pant leg, with shoes
facing forward.

Head: (Make 2)
Note: Unless otherwise noted, at end of each row,
you will chain 1 to turn.

With pink, ch 9.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea ch across. (8 sc)
Row 2: sc in ea sc across.
Row 3: 2 sc in first sc for increase, sc across to last sc,
2 sc in last sc for increase.
Rows 4 - 5: Repeat row 3 (two times). (14 sc at end of row 5)
Rows 6 - 11: sc in ea sc across.
Row 12 (Hat): Change to red; With red (sc in back loops only
for this row
); sc in ea sc across.
Row 13 - 18: (both loops) sc in ea sc across.
Row 19: sc first two sc tog for dec, sc in ea sc across
to last two sc, sc last two sc tog.
Row 20: sc in ea sc across.
Rows 21, 22: Repeat rows 19 and 20. (10 sc)
Rows 23 - 33: sc in ea sc across.
Row 34: Repeat row 19. (8 sc)
Rows 35 - 40: sc in ea sc across.
Row 41: Repeat row 19. (6 sc)
Rows 42 - 45: sc in ea sc across.
Row 46: Repeat row 19. (4 sc)
Rows 47 - 50: sc in ea sc across.
Row 51: Repeat row 19. (2 sc)
Rows 52 - 54: sc in ea sc across.
Row 55: sc two sc tog. (1 sc)

Hat Brim and Hair Bangs:
Attach red yarn in first unworked sc of row 14.
Row 1: sc in ea sc across. (14 sc)
Row 2: ch 3, slip stitch in first sc, (sc in next sc,
ch 16, sl st in next sc, ch 3, sl st in next sc) across.
Row 3: ch 1, sc in ch 3 space, sc in 8th (center)
chain of the ch 16, (working behind the ch 16, sc in ch 3 space,
then sc in 8th chain of the next ch 16) across. The loops
should hang down toward the face, for curly bangs.

Row 4 Brim: Attach white. With white, ch 2, dc in first
st, ch 2, sl st in top of dc just made, *sl st in next st, ch 2;
hdc, dc in next st; ch 2, sl st in top of dc just made; ch 3**
repeat * ** across. End sl st in last st. End off.

Nose: (Make 1) Do not join rounds.
With pink, ch 2.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc around. (14 sc)
Rnd 3: (sc next 2 sc tog) repeat around. (7 sc) This
round draws the nose into a little round ball.
Lightly stuff nose before crocheting rnd 4.
Rnd 4: (sc next 2 sc tog) three times, sl st in next sc.
End off. Sew the nose to the face.


With yarn and a large-eye yarn needle, embroider the eyes and
mouth in place.

Sew the two head/hat pieces together, leaving neck edge open for
stuffing. Stuff lightly up to about row 23 of hat. With red yarn
and large-eye yarn needle, stitch across hat where stuffing
stops, to hold it in place; or sew a button through both hat
thicknesses at this point to hold stuffing in place.
Sew neck to top of body.

Tie for Hat:
With white, ch 45. End off. Weave in ends. Tie tightly, in a bow,
around hat at about row 44.
